The Montessori method is a widely known and world-renowned “alternative” educational method that is used in thousands of schools around the world.
The method was developed by Italian doctor and educator, Maria Montessori, following her extensive research into the needs of children in their early years. The method consists of 5 basic principles.
Principles
Principle 1: Respect for the Child
This principle is the cornerstone of the Montessori method. Maria Montessori believed that children of all ages should be respected. At the time, this was not common practice in the early 20th century. This respect can be shown in a number of ways, such as not interrupting them when they are deep in concentration. Respect can also be shown by allowing children to have freedom to make their own choices, to learn for themselves and be more independent.
Principle 2: The Absorbent Mind
Montessori philosophy is based on the principles that experiencing life and the world around them is one of the best ways for children to develop and grow. Children are constantly absorbing information from the world, whether it be tasting a new food, singing, feeling the wind on their face or learning how to respect their peers. Experiencing the world through their senses can help children to make sense of their surroundings, build relationships and become more confident and independent.
Principle 3: Sensitive Periods
There is a time when children are ready to develop more specific and certain skills. These are known as sensitive periods and will last long enough for the child to gain these skills. These sensitive periods will differ for each child. We observe children carefully to determine when they will be ready to learn specific skills and to provide them with the resources that will help them to flourish.
Principle 4: The Prepared Environment
The environment in which a child learns, thrives and grows is so important. Our setting is completely child-centred and encourages children to explore the materials and resources on offer to them. We take care every day to prepare our environment so that it gives children to experience these resources in an independent, yet organised manner.
Auto education, also known as self-education is the belief that children are able to educate themselves through their environment, connection with others and a multitude of resources. We provide that environment and inspire children to gain the confidence to learn from their experiences.
